A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The fog came in over Skerry Point at four, the way it does every November, and by half past the foghorn was the only voice left on the island. Mam had gone across on the Tuesday boat to see about her hip, so it was me on the landing rocks with the torch and Dad up the tower with the lamp, the sea grey in every window of the keeper's cottage behind me.

Dad can't hear the horn. He hasn't heard anything since the boiler went at the yard when I was six, but he feels it through the iron stairs and knows the tide by the shake of the gallery. The supply boat was out there somewhere with Mr Pryce's coal and our post, and my radio had given me nothing but hiss for an hour. I couldn't shout across that much water, so I did the one thing the fog can't swallow.

I held the torch under my chin and made the sign we used every morning before school: thumb, first finger and little finger out, the middle two folded down. For a long time there was only the horn. Then the lamp swung round, stopped, and swung back, and in the flash I saw his hand against the glass at the top of the tower, the same three fingers, the same shape.

The boat came in twenty minutes later, its bow light finding the slipway, and Pryce swore at the weather and handed me the post. Dad was waiting at the foot of the stairs when I climbed up. He didn't say anything. He just put his palm flat against my cheek, still cold from the rail, and kept it there until the beam came round again.
