Silver metallic temporary tattoos on arms
Geometric · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A woman sits on a beach with her arms raised, wearing silver metallic temporary tattoos. On the upper arm there is a fine chain with two feather shapes, and on the forearms there are lotus motifs, mandala and lace-patterned bands and a crown-like border. The designs are rendered in flat metallic silver against tanned skin, with a soft natural light and a blurred sea and rocks behind her.

Mrs Penhallow's shop smelt of vinegar and hot tin, and Dora had been sweeping its floor since she was nine, so she knew what the silver was for before anyone told her. The summer visitors came up from the harbour wanting something that would wash off by Monday. Her uncle painted them with a sable brush dipped in quicksilver paste: lotus heads, a lace band for the wrist, a crown-shaped border above the elbow. Then he sent them out onto the sands to be admired.

The trouble started with the tide. Each evening the sea took the marks back, and each morning Dora walked the rocks below the chapel to see what it had kept. Once she found a feather in the wrack, flat and bright as a coin, and a fine chain link lying on the sand with the sun still caught in it. She put them in her apron pocket, and that night she painted a feather on her own forearm and sat on the step to wait.
Nobody came for her. The light went the colour of pewter over the water, the rocks turned black, and then the lace pattern on her arm began to lift from her skin and drift off like spray. She let it go. In the morning the shop bell rang and a stranger asked for something to wear to a wedding by the sea, and Dora reached for the brush before her uncle could speak.
