Three cats tattoo on a limb

Other · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows three cats drawn in simple, sketchy black outlines, with a larger central cat standing between two smaller seated cats. The linework is thin and loose with little shading, and the cats are left mostly unfilled. The design is in black ink only and sits across the centre of the skin with the edges of the frame showing dark fabric and a patterned surface.

Dear Priya,

You will not believe who turned up at the reunion in the back room of the Crown, and it was not Mr Haddow, who has apparently retired to Torquay with a boat he cannot steer. It was Dennis Pell, who still has the bald patch and still tells the story about the fire alarm. He brought a shoebox of photographs. Inside was one of us in Year Nine, squinting against the science block wall, and behind us, on the bin store roof, the three cats that lived there that winter.

Remember them? The big grey one with the torn ear that the caretaker called Sergeant, and the two skinny tabbies we named Bodkin and Shrimp because we could never tell them apart. We fed them crusts from the tuck shop and they sat in a row like they were waiting for a bus that never came. Dennis says the caretaker put down poison in March and the tabbies were gone by Easter. I have spent three days deciding whether to believe him.

Anyway, I drew them. You remember, I drew everything on the back of maths homework. I did a sketch of Sergeant standing tall with the two little ones seated at his feet, looking up at him as if he owed them an explanation. Dennis kept the original all these years. He gave it back to me in a sandwich bag, creased down the middle, and said I should have it done properly. So I did. The artist said the lines were too loose to hold, and I told him that was the whole point.

Come to the next one. Bring your bus pass, and bring the crusts if you still have any. Love, Hannah
