Simple things script lettering design
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
A vertical line of white, handwritten script reads Simple things on a plain black background. The strokes are thin and slightly varied in weight, with loops on the capitals and descenders. The image is monochrome and centred with generous empty space around the text.

Mind the puddle by the fish stall, love. It has been there since Thursday and it has views on everybody who steps in it. Sit yourself on that upturned crate, the one that doesn't wobble when you lean. Right. Now let me tell you about Ada Pryce and the card she lettered in 1971, which hung from the pole of her cheese stall for thirty years.

She sold eggs then, and string, and paper bags of barley sugar for children who came with their pennies clenched in their fists. People asked why she never stocked anything grand. Ada said grand things got bought once and forgotten. Simple things got used every day until they wore down to the shape of a hand.
Then one wet October her husband Frank went out on the early boat and didn't come back on the late one. The market shut for a day, which it never did. When Ada opened again she wrote two words on a strip of card in her thin, looping pen, tall enough to run the length of the pole, and she hung it there without explaining a thing to anyone.
Nobody argued with it. Folk took their change and their eggs and read the card on the way past, and by Christmas the whole row had slowed down to her pace. I never met a better seller of eggs or a sadder woman, and I've never been sure those two things were different. When she died the card came to me in a biscuit tin with a bus ticket and a brass button. It has gone soft at the corners, the way everything does that gets handled. Mind the puddle going out, love. Simple things, see. They're the ones that keep.
