Dear Ruth, the relief boat came early on Tuesday, so you needn't fret about the tins I sent back with it. The light has been steady since the storm, though the lamp glass cracked on the north side and Mr Pringle is coming out from Oban to see to it. I haven't told him about the fox yet.

She comes down the rocks at the bottom of the tide, always through the same gap in the wall, and sits where the weed stops. Her head is the shape of a pen stroke someone made without lifting the nib, ears up, muzzle turned to the water as if she is listening for the bell buoy. I have given up trying to count her coats. Last week she carried a gull's wing up the steps and left it by the door, neat as a cat with a mouse, and I have decided that is a kind of apology for the crab I threw at her.

Yesterday the sea came over the causeway earlier than the tables promised, and I had to wade back from the boathouse with the paraffin on my shoulder. She was waiting at the top of the steps, not hurrying, just watching the water climb. When I reached her she turned and went up the path ahead of me, stopping every few yards to check I was still coming, which is more than Pringle ever managed.

I keep thinking about the way she looks back. Come at Easter if the boat allows it, and bring your sketchbook. I want you to draw her the way you draw things that won't hold still, quickly and without lifting the pencil from the paper. Your loving brother, Alec.
