Open book on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small outline of an open book sits on the wrist, with its pages drawn as simple wavy lines. The linework is thin and even, and the ink is solid black with no shading. The tattoo is centred on a plain red background, with the hand raised at the top of the frame.

Dear Marian,

I found your copy of Cold Comfort Farm at the bottom of a box when we cleared Mum's flat on Alderney Road. Your name is still inside the front cover in purple biro, and someone, probably you, has written 'NOT FINISHED, DON'T ASK' beside the contents page. The pages have gone wavy from years of sitting near the radiator, as if the sea had been at them.

I know the reunion is at the Crown on the 14th and you'll be there in your good coat, telling everyone about the Lisbon job. I won't be. The bus from Hexham costs more than the ticket, and I've never been much good at standing in rooms full of people who remember me as the girl who cried in Mr Pryce's English lessons. You'd have stood next to me anyway, I think, and pretended to be bored.

So I'm posting it back. I read the bit you'd underlined, the one about Flora and the cousins and the dreadful weather, and I laughed in the same place you did in the fifth form. I'm sorry it took me thirty years to finish it.

I've wrapped it in brown paper and written your address in capitals, the way Mr Pryce made us do everything, and I've left a bookmark at page ninety-one, where you gave up. Come and collect the rest of the story on the 14th, or don't. Either way, it's yours.

Love, Helen
