Single-line elephant on inner upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photo of an inner upper arm showing a small black tattoo of an elephant drawn in one continuous outline. The elephant lies low, with its trunk and tail stretched along a long horizontal line that runs under its body. The linework is thin and even with no shading, and the tattoo is in black ink against pale skin with a dark top edge at the sleeve.

The hall smells of floor polish and warm squash, and somebody has pinned the Year Four class photographs to the wall beside the fire door. You are scanning the third row for your own stupid grin when Denise Okafor-Hale taps your shoulder with a plastic cup and says you still owe her an elephant.

She means the drawing. You made it in the back of a reading book during a wet dinner break: a long snake in one unbroken line, and somewhere along its belly a low, flattened elephant with its trunk stretched out like a dropped scarf. Miss Pryce held it up in front of the class and asked what it was, and you said a hat, because you were nine and hats seemed safer than the truth. Denise kept hers. She has carried it for thirty years, folded in four and soft as cloth.

She unfolds it now under the strip light and passes it over. The creases have gone grey, but the elephant is still there, and so is the trunk, and so is the question you never answered. You had always assumed the snake was eating it. Looking now, you see the elephant lies easy along the line, the way a thing does when it is being carried rather than swallowed.

"It was never a hat," Denise says. "You were telling us you'd be fine." She folds it back along the old creases and presses it into your palm. Across the hall someone shouts your name, badly pronounced, and you close your fist around the paper and go.
