Cat outline on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single-line outline of a cat walking to the right, with its tail raised, sits on the inner forearm. A second dotted line runs slightly offset from the solid outline, creating a faint shadow effect. The tattoo is in black ink on pale skin against a plain light background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Tuesday, mooring below Hemingford lock. Rain on the cabin roof since noon, and the cat has been sulking on the coal box since we tied up. Mother's rule was that Marmalade never went ashore without a lead, and she never went ashore without leaving something behind: a half-eaten sprat on the towpath, a tuft of ginger on the sill. I thought she was the only thing on this boat that knew which way was forward.

Dad's notebook says the barge was named Patience and carried cargo between Ely and Cambridge before the lorries took the trade. He wrote that the cat walked the gunwale from bow to stern every morning, tail up like a flag, and that her shadow on the water always lagged a half-step behind her. I laughed at that the first time I read it. This morning I stood on the towpath while the lock keeper's dog barked at nothing, and watched her do exactly that, her dark copy keeping time a beat behind.

I sold the business in March, which is the sensible thing and the thing I keep being told is brave. Nobody mentions the shadow. The lock keeper says the last cat on Patience lived to nineteen. Marmalade is nine and has never once looked back.

I opened the tin and she came down off the coal box, walked the length of the roof, and stopped at the bow. Then she turned, looked at me over her shoulder, and waited with her tail straight up. I went to get my boots.
