The last train pulled out of Coldharbour Junction at twenty past eleven, and by midnight you are alone on Platform Four with the lost property box and a paper fox someone left on the bench. It was folded from a single sheet of the timetable, every crease so precise you can feel the edges through your gloves, and its face is all angled planes, one ear pointed like a shard of slate.

Mrs Abernathy brought it in on Tuesday. She said her granddaughter had made it on the Eastbound, hands busy while her mother read, and had insisted it be kept somewhere high and dry until someone came asking. Nobody has. You set it on the signal shelf beside the paraffin lamp, where the draught from the tunnel can't reach it, and you go back to counting tickets.

Around one, the telephone rings in the empty stationmaster's office, though that line was cut years ago. You don't answer. Instead you find yourself opening the fox along its seams, slowly, the way you'd unpick a stitch, and inside the last fold there is a pencilled line in a child's round hand: Dad, the fox is going north.

You fold it back up as neatly as you can, which is not very well, and set it facing the northbound line. When the first milk train comes through at five, its lamp catches the sharp ear and throws a small bright triangle across the rails, and you find you are waiting for it to move.
