The seed trays are stacked three high in the potting shed now, and I have stopped pretending I will sort them before Thursday. Mum would have had them labelled by March. You know how she was with a biro, that slanted, looping hand she used on every jar and tin, so that half the village could read her shopping list from across the counter.

I found the old bread tin under the bench yesterday. Inside were forty-odd packets of runner beans and a single envelope addressed to you, the word on the front written in those loops that always leaned as if they were running for a bus. I did not open it. I sat on the upturned bucket with the sun coming through the cracked glass and tried to decide whether the word inside was the one you would want or the one I could bear.

The gate still sticks in wet weather. I oiled the hinge on Sunday, the way Dad used to, and it gave a small complaint before it swung. The lavender by the path has gone woody, and the rosemary has taken over the bed where the sweet peas used to climb, but the dahlias came up regardless, orange and stubborn, just as she always said things would.

So I am sending the envelope with this letter. Come on Saturday and bring a trowel. We can plant the beans against the south wall, and you can read whatever she wrote while I dig, or not read it at all. The rows will be crooked. They always were.
