Smile script tattoo on a wrist
Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
The image shows a close view of an inner wrist with the word Smile written in flowing black script, joined by a looping swirl that curls around the left side of the lettering. The linework is fine and even, with solid black ink and no shading or colour. The wrist is shown with the palm and fingers in the lower part of the frame, and a blue denim sleeve fills the sides of the photo.

Dear Imogen,

I am writing from the back room of the Lantern Ferry office, where the kettle has been broken since Tuesday and Mr Pell refuses to call the man who fixes things. You asked whether the ferry crossing is still as miserable as you remember. It is, though the gulls have grown bolder, and one stole a whole sausage roll from my hand at the landing stage on Monday. I laughed so hard the deckhand thought I had been taken ill.
You will not believe what came off the Haddow boat yesterday. A small wooden crate, addressed to me in your handwriting, though I know you never sent it. Inside was a ribbon of brown paper, curled like a question, and on it someone had written one word in very neat ink. Smile. No signature. I have turned it over a hundred times and cannot tell whether it is a joke or a kindness. Mrs Aske swears it came from the lighthouse keeper's granddaughter, who was always too clever for her own good.
I have pinned it above the ticket tin. Every morning I look at it and every morning the swirl at the start of the word seems to curl a little tighter, as if it is waiting for me to reach the end of my sentence before it lets go.
Write soon. Tell me the sea behaves itself where you are.
Yours, with ink on my cuff, Ruth
