Small dotted symbol on a forearm
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small black tattoo of an abstract symbol made of solid dots and thin lines sits on the inner forearm. The linework is uniform and solid black with no shading, set against pale skin. A teal skull bead bracelet is visible at the top of the frame, and the background is a blurred grey street.

The telegraph at Skerrin Point had gone quiet for nine days when Ada Fenwick first copied the marks into her ledger. Three dots stood upright like fence stakes, one crowded to the left, two leaning off to the right, and a last dot dropped beneath the rest, plumb as a lead line. She had seen the same arrangement pencilled on the back of a tide table, always in the same careful hand. Nobody on the island could say who made it.

Mr Corran, the postmaster, insisted the wire was clean and that a bored boy had been at the key. But the marks came again at dusk, always on the turn of the tide, and always when the water crept over the flat stones below the lighthouse. Ada took her ledger down to the shore and matched the pattern against what she could see: the tall rock, the three low slabs, the bell buoy bobbing past the reef.
By the fourth evening she understood that the marks were not a message at all but a chart. The dots were places where boats had gone under, and the lines joining them were the courses those boats had been keeping when the squall came. Ada wrote the names of the last fishing fleet beside each mark, and the sixth dot, the one set furthest from the rest, matched the Gannet.
She climbed the tower, lit the great lamp early, and turned it three long beats and two short toward the water, the only signal her father had ever taught her. Next morning a dinghy rowed in past the reef with a single figure at the oars, one hand raised to the glass as though it had been waiting for a light to show it the way home.
