Curled sleeping cat line drawing
Black and grey · Flash
A cat lies curled and asleep, with its eyes closed, head resting on its body and whiskers extended. The design is drawn in smooth, bold black outlines with no shading or fill. It is shown on a plain white background, with the tail sweeping in a long loop across the image.

Sit closer, the lot of you, and mind the gravel, because the cat is listening and she does not like being stepped on. Her name was Mab, and she belonged to the walled garden at Thornbury Lodge, back when the gardener was a widower called Ansel Pike who grew nothing but runner beans and grudges.

Every evening Mab would climb down from the glasshouse roof and find the warmest stone in the whole wall, the one beside the sundial, and curl herself round like a dropped length of rope. She slept with her head tucked into her own flank and her tail flung out across the path, so long that Ansel had to step over it with his bucket every night, and every night he swore the tail had grown an inch.
One October the sundial stopped telling the right hour. Ansel blamed the rain, the rooks, and the vicar's nephew, but the true trouble was that Mab had begun to sleep later and later, until the lamps were lit and the garden had gone blue. The tail, meanwhile, kept on going. It looped the beds, crossed the paths, and wound once around the rain butt before curling back toward her nose.
Ansel followed it one dusk with a lantern. At the very end, past the last bean pole, he found a gap in the wall he had never noticed, and beyond it the whole village lay asleep under the same blue sky. He stood there a long while, then turned back, stepped carefully over the tail, and left the gate open for her.
