Tom has been gone eleven weeks now. The harbour master says the sea gives back what it wants in its own time, and I have stopped arguing with him about it. What I have not stopped doing is hanging her lead on the hook by the back door, because my hand goes to it every morning before my head remembers.

Last Thursday a boy from the bakery sat down beside me and asked why I kept looking at the water as if it owed me money. I told him about the dog. He said his gran had one just like her, a scruffy yellow mongrel with one ear up. He drew it for me in chalk on the slipway: head cocked, tail curled round its paws, a collar with a little tag. It was not very good. It was exactly right.

I am giving the lead to him tomorrow. Someone should be walking a dog up these steps at six, even if it is only the bakery's dog, and I can sit on the bollard and pretend I am not watching for a whistle. Come at Easter if the trains run. Bring nothing. The kettle is on and the wall is dry.
