Dear Sir or Madam, further to your query about the Ministry's inventory of Halloway Castle, I am obliged to report that the six wristwatches recovered from the south postern are still, as far as I can tell, wrong. We pulled them from the silt in March, when the drainage crew reopened the moat. Each has a little grey screen and the same word across it, LATE, in capitals that never blink away. Mr Pring, who has kept the gatehouse clock for thirty-one years, insists they were dropped by a courier sent to fetch the Lord Chamberlain who never arrived.

I have tried to return them. The first went to the Dolby Trust in Ludlow, which said the batteries were flat and the straps had perished, so they could not be the watches on the auction list. The second I took to a jeweller in Shrewsbury, who held it to his ear, shook his head, and asked whether anybody had ever been on time for anything on account of it.

I enclose a photograph. Note the strap colours, which our conservator says are younger than the castle's own plaster but older than the tea urn. Pring has pinned the six of them above the kettle in the lodge, and each morning he moves the hands forward a minute, as if that might help anyone catch up.
