Mrs Pargeter in number four has asked twice whether the sea is always this loud, and I have told her yes, it is always this loud, that is what you pay the extra shilling for. She did not laugh. I went up to the box room this morning to fetch the spare kettle and found Harold's ledger tucked behind the water tank, the one he kept before the war, when every lodger was a line and every line had a box drawn round it. He used to rule the page into little rectangles and fill in three upright strokes for each week a room was let. Three bars meant a fortnight, paid up. Four was a fortnight and a day, which he called showing off.

There are two rectangles on the last page with no strokes at all. Beside them, in his square hand, he has written the name of the boat he was waiting on. I have not told anyone that I know what the boat was called, nor that it came in on the Thursday tide with only one man aboard, nor that the man was not Harold. I am going to put the kettle on now, and when the post comes I will draw three bars in the margin, and wait for the next tide the way he taught me, one stroke at a time.
