Six white line icons on black
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A sheet of six small icon designs drawn in thin white outline on a plain black background. The motifs are a flower of life inside a circle, an umbrella with falling drops, a six-pointed star figure, a smile with closed eyes, a headstone with a small heart, and two hands clasping. The linework is even and uniform with no shading, and the image uses only black and white.

Ada Mossgrave kept her tokens in a biscuit tin under the stern bench of the Grey Heron, and on the long crossing out to the far skerries she would take one out and turn it over the way other women turned rosary beads. There was a wire flower caught inside a ring, a tin umbrella with three drops painted beneath it, a six-pointed star that never quite closed, a grinning face with its eyes shut, a small stone headstone with a heart cut into it, and a pair of brass hands clasped together.

Nobody paid her in coin. The umbrella had come from a cooper's boy who had no fare when the rain blew sideways for three days, and the star from a man who could not swim and had to be lifted over the gunwale like a crate. Ada took what the passengers could not spare and carried them regardless. Her rule was simple: a token was only ever owed back, never sold, and a debt paid in the right thing was no debt at all.
In the spring the sea lay flat as slate, and a girl came down the pier at Scalloway with nothing in her hands. She asked what could be given for a passage. When Ada said she had nothing to pay with, the girl said she had only a name she would rather not carry any further. Ada tipped the tin toward her. 'Then take the hands,' she said, 'and hold on to whoever is holding you.'
Somewhere past the halfway light the girl began to cry, quietly, and Ada kept the oars moving. When they came in to the skerries the girl walked up the shingle with the brass hands closed in her fist, and Ada watched her go until the rain came down over the hill and took her from sight.
