Outlined downward triangle on a forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single equilateral triangle, pointing downwards, is outlined in solid black ink on a pale forearm. The linework is even and bold with a clean, unshaded interior, and the skin shows freckles and faint texture around it. The tattoo sits centrally against a plain dark background with a light grey fabric at the left edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Hannah Doyle had chalked the mark on the pit-head door every morning since her father's hands stopped being steady enough for it. A downward triangle, sharp as a shovel blade, meant the seam was wet and the men should wait in the lamp room. Her father had taught her it at the kitchen table with a burnt stick and a saucer of cold tea, and she had never once asked why it pointed down rather than up.

The colliery manager, Mr Ancell, rubbed it off with his sleeve each time, calling it superstition for men who could not read a shift book. On the Tuesday after the rain, he took the chalk from her hand and wrote the figures himself, and the cage went down with forty men and a boy named Tom Rendle who had come up from the farm that week. Hannah stood at the rail with her shawl pulled tight and watched the wheel turn.

The water came through the north level at half past ten, not in a rush but in a slow, patient rise, the way water finds the lowest place in a house. Nobody died that day. Ancell had the men out by the old shaft at noon, grey-faced and quiet, and Tom Rendle sat on the step of the lamp room telling anyone who would listen that he had felt it coming like a draught on the back of his neck.

Hannah went out the next morning with a fresh stick of chalk and drew the triangle on the door again, larger this time, so that anyone coming in from the dark would have to see it. Ancell found her at it and did not wipe it away. He stood beside her for a while, then took off his cap and waited with her for the cage.
