Skull and roses in lilac hair on the thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A skull wearing long, flowing lilac hair with red and pink roses tucked into it is shown in profile, with three small skulls placed around the hair. The linework is bold and black, with the hair drawn as fine curved strands and the skull shaded in grey. Lilac, pink and red inks dominate the colour, and the design fills the frame against a plain background of skin and dark clothing.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The keeper's wife had hair the colour of the sea just before a storm came in, and she kept it long because the gulls liked to tug at it from the rocks. Nobody on Scarrow Head thought this strange. They thought it stranger that she never went down to the harbour on Sundays, and stranger still that she grew roses in a tin bath on the lamp-room step, where the salt should have killed them.

Her husband, Tobias Yule, climbed the one hundred and twelve stairs each dusk to light the great lamp, and each night he counted the boats home. When three did not come back in the autumn gale, he came down the stairs slower than usual. She met him at the bottom with a fistful of red roses and said the sea kept what it was owed. He did not ask what she meant. He had lived with her long enough to know she kept her accounts in flowers.

Each winter after, three small skulls washed up on the shingle below the tide line, polished white by the water, and she carried them up in her apron and set them along the cottage wall where the lamp swept over them. The village said it was unlucky to keep bones. She said they were only the sea's receipts, and a woman ought to sign for what she was given.

On the night Tobias died, the lamp failed at dusk for the first time in forty years, and ships came in blind toward the rocks. She climbed the stairs with her hair loose and roses pinned through it, and turned the great brass wheel by hand until morning, and nobody was lost. At first light the three skulls were gone from the wall. In their place on the shingle lay three red roses, wet and perfectly whole.
