Skyline line tattoo on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A single continuous black line forms a skyline of varying peaks and dips, running across the side of a bare ankle and foot. The linework is thin and even, with the ink appearing solid and crisp against the skin. The image is black and white, with a soft, textured fabric in the background and the foot placed diagonally across the frame.

Dear Tomas,

I climbed up to the keep again this morning, the one with the roof gone and the jackdaws living in the window where Father used to hang the lamp. From there you can see all of Saltmarsh laid out below, and I tried what you told me, drawing it without lifting the pen. You said a line that never breaks is the only honest way to show a town, because it has to go up where the chimneys go and down where the gaps are.
The first attempt went wrong at the church. I couldn't find the spire, so I let the line wander down to the quay and back up over the fish sheds, and by the time I reached the castle wall the paper was smudged from my thumb. I tried again after lunch, sitting on the cold stone with the wind pulling at my cuffs, and this time the line held. It climbed the broken battlements, dropped into the market roofs, rose for the mill chimney that Mrs Heald swears is the tallest thing in the county, and ended at the harbour mouth where your boat went out.
I've pinned it above the range. It looks like a heartbeat taken by someone very patient, and every time I walk past I count the peaks and try to work out where you'd have been standing to see it. Write when you make port, and tell me which of these peaks is yours.
Love, Nell
