Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A raised hand with the index and middle fingers extended in a V shape, showing a very small black outlined heart on the side of one finger. The linework is thin and even, and the heart is simple with no shading. The skin is pale against a plain grey background, and the nails are painted a dark colour.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ruth Abernethy had been the ferry clerk on Inchcolm Skerry for thirty-one winters, and in all that time she had never once drawn a heart on a manifest. So when the Thursday crate arrived from Oban with a note tucked under the lid, reading only "for the one who keeps the book", she turned it over twice before she opened it.

Inside was a steel nib wrapped in oilcloth and a brown glass bottle no bigger than her thumb. The boatmen laughed when she showed them. Fergus Coull said nobody needed ink that small for anything but a sailor's grudge, and Morag at the pier-head said it was a courting trick from the mainland. Ruth said nothing. She took the nib home, sat by the stove, and practised on the back of a spoiled tide table until her wrist ached.

It took her four nights to make a heart the size of a barley grain. The line came out thin and even, the one curve folding down into its point with nothing added to it. She pressed the mark into the margin of the ledger at the page for the last crossing of the year, the one nobody had booked, and waited for the ink to dry before she closed the book.

In March the Oban boat came in with a passenger who asked for a Mrs Abernethy by name. He carried a folded sheet with the same small heart drawn on it, and beneath it, in a hand she knew from forty years of letters, a single line: you kept the book, I kept the crossing. Ruth put the kettle on and did not ask him to sit down.
