Small anchor tattoo on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small black anchor sits on the side of a bare ankle, shown above a bare foot resting on a wooden floor. The linework is thin and single-needle in style, with the anchor rendered in solid black ink and no shading. The composition is a close, low-angle view of the lower leg, with dark denim and a black shoe at the left of the frame.

The morning boat to the islands was three hours late and the quay at Newlyn smelled of diesel and wet rope when Nell Garrow decided she would not board without it. She had two twenty-pound notes folded in her sock and an address written on the back of a tide table, and she walked the length of the harbour wall with the stubborn certainty that a sailor's mark should be small enough to keep to herself.

The man in the shop wiped his hands on a grey towel and asked where she wanted it. She pointed to the side of her foot, where a boot would hide it. He laughed, not unkindly, and said most of his customers wanted anchors on their arms so the whole pub could admire them. Nell told him her grandfather had worn one in exactly that spot, though her grandfather had never owned anything more nautical than a tin of mackerel, and the man let the lie go without comment.

The needle was thin as a hair. The ink went in quick and black, one stroke for the shank, one for the crossbar, a curl at the ring that he hurried because the gulls had started screaming outside. When she looked down, the little anchor looked as if it had been waiting there for years for her to notice it.

The boat sailed at six the next morning with the swell running long and grey under the hull. Nell stood at the rail with her collar up, watching the Lamorna cliffs drop behind, and when the deck lifted over a wave she felt a small pull beneath her boot, steady as a hand on a rope, telling her exactly where the ground was going to be.
