Small arrow tattoo on a finger
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small black arrow points upward along the side of a finger, with short angled strokes forming the feathers at its tail. The linework is thin and simple, filled with solid black ink and no shading. The hand rests on a textured grey knitted fabric, and the skin has a slight sheen from the light.

The fog came in off the Mare Rock before the boats had cleared the bar, and by dusk the whole of Carrick Quay had gone the colour of wet slate. Tamsin Roe stood on the breakwater with her master's bow in one hand and the last arrow in the other. Old Abel had fletched a single shaft every evening for forty years, cut the feathers short and angled them so the wind would catch them, and fired it straight up over the harbour wall. Where it came down, the boats knew to steer.

Her fingers were too cold to feel the nock. She had watched Abel do it a thousand times and still she had to try twice, the string burning across the pad of her finger. The first shot went wide and vanished into grey. She heard the Mary Ellen's bell somewhere out past the rocks, faint and wrong, and felt the sick drop in her stomach that comes when you know you have one chance.
She drew, held, and let go. The arrow climbed thin and black until the fog swallowed it, then came a clatter on the roof of the lamp house, and the lamp, which had been dark since Abel's chest gave out, flared white. One by one the boats came up the channel, the Mary Ellen first, her skipper lifting a hand to the breakwater as he passed.
In the morning the arrow lay in the mud at low water with its feathers flattened. Tamsin picked it out and kept it. That spring the women of the quay began inking a small arrow on their children's hands before the boats went out, pointing up the way home, and Tamsin did the feathers herself.
