Small looped symbol on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a small black tattoo on the side of a finger, showing a looped symbol with a few curved strokes that resembles a stylised letter m or a zodiac-style glyph. The linework is thin and even, with solid black ink and no shading. The finger fills the frame diagonally against a soft, out-of-focus background, and the tattoo sits near the middle of the image.

The mist has come down over Scarth Pass before noon, and the sheep have gone quiet in the way they do when weather is coming. You stand at the cairn with the old boundary book open on your knee, its pages swollen with damp, and trace the loops on the stone with your thumb. Three humps and a tail, the same mark Ada Pickering cut into every boundary stone on her father's side of the fell.

Nobody at Hollin Farm has ever explained the mark to you. The Pickerings say it means keep to the wall, the Bells say it is a hoof print, and the vicar's wife swears it is a letter, though she could never tell you which. What you do know is that the stones carrying it are the only ones that never shifted in the great flood of 1948, when the becks came tearing down the scar and carried off everything else.

Ada's ledger, which you found in a biscuit tin under the stairs, has one entry in pencil beside a careful drawing of the glyph: Gave Tom the loops so he would find his way down. He never could read his letters, but he could follow a shape. Beneath it, in different ink, someone has added: He came down in the end.

You close the book and turn up your collar. Below, the mist thins over the valley, and a single lamp shows at Hollin where someone has left it burning for you. You follow the wall down, counting the stones, and at each one you press your thumb to the loops until the cold goes out of the stone and into your hand.
