Small bird tattoo on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small bird in profile, drawn in a single continuous black outline with a long beak, round eye and thin tail. The linework is even and uncluttered, with no shading, and the ink sits on the inner wrist. The composition is centred on the tattoo, with blue denim and a yellow-green jacket blurred in the background.

Hester had her ringing pliers in one pocket and a cold cup of tea in the other when the bird settled on the gate at the edge of Coldharbour Wood, tail flicking, as though it had been waiting for the village to finish its breakfast. Nobody else in Lowick ever seemed to see it. Her father had called it the gatekeeper and never explained himself, and she had stopped asking the year he died.

She kept the nets up through March anyway, strung between the alders where the mist hung longest. The bird never once went in. It sat on the gatepost with its long bill pointed at the sky, watching her fumble with the mesh, and when she turned for the lane it dropped down to the grass to pick at something she could not see. Her father's notebook was still in the shed, forty years of dates and weather in his square capitals. On the last page, under a sketch of a bird in one unbroken line, he had written: She comes when the house is quiet. Don't net her. Let her see you first.
So on the first warm morning in April she folded the net into the hedge, pulled the stile back, and sat down on the cold wood with her cup. The bird came over the wall in a low rush, perched on her knee for the length of a breath, and then lifted off towards the trees. Hester stayed where she was until the mist burned off the field and the church clock struck eight. Then she walked home through the wet grass, and behind her the gate creaked once, as if someone were still counting her in.
