Small black cross-like symbol on a heel
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a small black tattoo on the side of a bare foot, near the heel. The design is a compact symbol built from crossing bars and cross shapes, drawn in solid dark ink with clean edges. The skin around it is slightly reddened, and a white tissue with a small spot of blood sits at the left of the frame against a dark background.

The boards at the Tern Ballroom had a soft spot under the third pillar, and Mr Hadley wanted it found before the Saturday dance. I went down on my knees with a tin of chalk and a cold chisel, tapping for the hollow sound. Wherever the wood gave, I drew a cross, two bars crossing with a third laid over them like a bolt on a gate, so the carpenters would know where to cut.

Nobody asked why I made them so careful. I suppose I liked the look of them, the white chalk against the honey-coloured pine. Sylvie from the cloakroom said they looked like tiny flags planted by a surveyor who had given up on the rest of the map. She was the only one who came to watch me work, sitting on the stage steps with a bag of pear drops and her shoes off.
By the Friday I had nine crosses and a headache, and the band was tuning up through the wall. Sylvie stood in the middle of the floor and asked me to show her the one under the pillar. I knelt and pointed. She stepped right over it, arms out, and danced the length of the hall on her own while I listened to each board take her weight, firm and true, exactly where I had told them to.
Hadley paid me for nine. The following week I sanded the crosses away, one by one, until the floor was even again. I still know where each one was, though, the way you know which stair creaks in a house you have left.
