Small cross tattoo on a finger
Hand · Black and grey · Photo
The image shows a small, solid black cross tattoo on the side of a finger, held up against a blurred car interior. The cross has slightly uneven, bold linework and is rendered in solid black ink with no visible shading. Dark nail polish and the dashboard sit in the background, and the cross is placed near the centre of the frame.

The paint ran out the spring my uncle Tam was sent to the mainland for his hip, so we did the cross in tar. Dad heated the tin on the Calor ring in the boat shed while I held the brush steady against the wind coming off the Sound of Skarra. Nobody on Skarra had ever painted a cross straight. Tam used to say the sea didn't want straight lines, it wanted something a man could recognise from a mile off.

We put it on the bow of the Morag, low down where the spray hits, a black stroke longer than my arm with a crossbar that sagged to the left as if it was tired. Dad stood back with his hands in his pockets and said it would do. Gulls sat on the slipway watching us. Mrs Gunn from the shop came down with a flask, looked at it for a long time, and said, Well, they'll know it's yours.
Tam came home in May with a new hip and no patience for being fussed over. He walked down to the slipway on his stick, looked at the tar cross, and laughed until he had to sit on a creel. Then he took the brush from me and went over every line again, thick where it had been thin, so that by evening it looked less like a mistake and more like a promise somebody had meant to keep.
The tide takes the tar a little each winter. Every spring I go down with the tin and the brush and do it again, my thumb black to the knuckle for a week. Dad says the boat never needed it. I tell him that isn't what it's for.
