Small daisy tattoo on the back of a hand
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small black tattoo of a daisy-like flower with a curved stem sits on the back of a hand, with the fingers curled slightly. The linework is thin and solid, with no visible shading, and the design is shown against warm, soft-focus skin. The tattoo is placed toward the side of the hand, with the rest of the hand and wrist filling the frame.

The Harrow Brothers' Travelling Marvel had three elephants fewer than it had in its good years, and by the autumn of the long wet the big top had more patches than canvas. Old Mabel Quoy kept the ringmaster's coat in a biscuit tin and mended it each night beside the generator, because the ringmaster had gone off with the takings in the spring and nobody had the heart to say so.

Her granddaughter Ivy sold tickets at a card table under the flap. Nobody came. One Tuesday a stray daisy pushed up through the crack in the ring, where the sawdust had rotted into black soil, and Ivy knelt in the mud to look at it. It had a thin green stem bent like a question and one white head with a yellow eye.
Mabel told her to pull it, since a flower in the ring meant the ground was finished. Ivy didn't. She carried water from the standpipe in a jam jar every evening, and the daisy leaned toward the lamp the way the lion used to lean toward the drum.
In the last week of the wet, a boy from the new estate came in out of the rain with two pence and asked what the flower was for. Ivy said it wasn't for anything. He bought a ticket anyway, sat alone in the empty stands, and clapped when the daisy opened fully at dusk. By morning the tent was down, the poles were stacked, and the field lay flat and green, and Mabel said the ground had only wanted the sawdust swept up and left alone.
