Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small, simple black Om symbol sits on the inner wrist or lower forearm, with clean, solid lines and no shading. The wrist is worn with several leather and cord bracelets and a silver chain that cross the lower part of the frame. The background is softly blurred and includes a Union Jack patterned object on the right.

You are sent up the Saltmere road in the last week of frost, carrying a sealed tin of bell-metal dust and a letter the abbess has not let you read. The kingdom of Ardenmoor has three bell towers left standing, and each has gone silent in a different way. At the foot of the cliff, the fishermen say the bell at Corran Haven rings by itself when the tide turns, and nobody has been brave enough to climb up and check.

The founder, Oda Venn, has burn scars up both forearms and a habit of humming while she works. She does not look up when you come in. She tells you to hold the crucible lid steady and to stop counting, because counting is how the metal learns you are afraid. When the melt goes gold she lifts the ladle and pours in one unbroken line, and the mould gives a sound low enough to feel in your teeth, a single note with a hum beneath it like a second voice keeping time.
It cracks on the third night. Oda sits on the cold floor and laughs, properly, for the first time you have heard. "Good," she says. "It was never meant to ring for anyone who wanted it to." She sends you down the cliff path with the broken casting over your shoulder and a hammer, and tells you to break off a piece and bring the rest back.
At Corran Haven the old bell still hangs, green with salt. When you strike the cracked piece against it, the note that comes out is the one you swallowed in the foundry, and somewhere below the cliff the tide begins to go out.
