Flower outline tattoo on the upper ear

Botanical · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A five-petalled flower is outlined in black on the upper inner rim of an ear, with a clear gem stud sitting in its centre. The linework is smooth and even, and the petals are left unshaded so the skin shows through. The image is in colour only in the skin tones and the clear stone, with a soft focus on the hair and the lower stud earring around the edges.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mr Pryce's shop on Chapel Street had one window that caught the morning sun, and I was the girl who cleaned it. Mother thought a jeweller's was a step up from the sorting room at the post office, and she was right, though I never told her the best part was the tins. Every drawer held paste stones sorted by colour, and I knew the feel of them the way other girls knew their prayers.

The brooch arrived on a wet Thursday in March, wrapped in brown paper and tied with garden twine. Five petals in blackened silver wire, and a clear stone set dead centre. Mrs Ambler, who lived out past the mill, said her sister had made it the summer before the war from a hedge rose she had pressed between two bricks. Mr Pryce said stones like that were only glass, then held it to the window anyway, the way everyone did.

She wanted the stone reset and nothing more. Her sister had died in the spring, the setting had gone loose, and she could not bear to lose the one bright thing the old woman had left. I took it to the bench after closing. Under the loupe I found letters scratched inside one petal, so faint I had to tilt the wire toward the lamp: E.A. and a date in 1939. Beneath them, smaller still, someone had written 'come home'.

I rang Mrs Ambler from the box outside the mill the next morning and told her the stone was seated, the petals were true, and there was a message she had not mentioned. She was quiet a long while. Then she said her sister had never come home, and she had kept the brooch on the shelf so the wire would not tarnish. That afternoon I set the flower on the velvet at the front of the window, where the sun could reach the stone and throw a small clear light across the pavement.
