Small botanical sprig on inner forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a small tattoo on the inside of a forearm, showing two thin crossing stems ending in three round buds. The linework is delicate and the ink is solid black with no shading. The subject sits centrally on the arm against a red brick wall, with a rolled plaid sleeve at the top of the frame.

Mrs Ivy Pargeter had grown the same blackcurrant bush at Lower Orchard for forty years and had never once been asked to cut a bloom for a wedding, so when Tom Haddow turned up at the back gate with his hat in his hands and asked for two stems of something, she made him describe the bride first. He said her name was Nell, that she was tall, and that she laughed with her whole face. Ivy went to the cold frame anyway and came back with a bundle of hellebores, cut close, their buds still shut like fists.

"They won't open till Thursday," she said. "Your Nell will have to wait for them, same as the rest of us."
He said that was fine. He said the vicar wanted something simple for the altar and something bolder for the groom's buttonhole, and could she manage both before Saturday.
Ivy tied the stems on the potting bench with garden twine, crossing them the way her mother had shown her to keep a split cane from slipping. Three buds to each stem, nodding at the top. She bound the join in a scrap of red-and-black plaid and told him to hold it steady while she sealed the twine with wax.
On the Saturday Nell wore the buttonhole up the aisle. The vicar, who had never once noticed a flower in his life, remarked that the crossed stems looked like two old friends leaning into a hard wind. Ivy stood at the back and watched the hellebores open one by one in the warm porch, and thought that a knot tied properly would hold.
