Small bow on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small bow is drawn in a single thin black line, with two looped ends and two trailing tails. It sits on pale skin on the inner wrist, with the rest of the arm and a dark background visible at the edges. The photo is black and white, so the ink appears as solid black against the skin.

The knot was wrong, said Mirela, and the ferry would not leave until it was right. Old Teodor at the crossing had seen a great many strings tied to wrists that season, each one a small promise to come back, and he had no quarrel with promises. It was the loops he distrusted. A loop left open could be pulled, and a loop pulled could carry a name across the water to someone who had no business with it.

So he made her sit on the upturned crate by the barrier and tie it again while he watched. Two loops, he said, and two tails, and the tails must be the same length or the thing would not hold. She did it three times. Her fingers were quick but the cord kept slipping, and the lamp over the gate kept flickering, and a lorry behind them sounded its horn twice, then gave up.
When it finally sat right she held it up against the light. The bow was black on the black cord, and it looked, Teodor thought, like nothing so much as a child's drawing of a bird that had decided to sit down. He stamped the slip, pushed it through the hatch, and the ferry bell rang.
Mirela crossed with her hand closed around the bit of cord, and did not look back until the far bank had ticked into view. Teodor kept the old scissors in his drawer, and the next time someone asked him to pass a boat, he tied the knot the way he had been taught, two loops and two tails, and never once let the ends come loose.
