Small bow on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small outlined bow with two trailing ribbon ends sits on the inner wrist of a light-skinned arm, with the hand visible at the top of the frame. The linework is thin and slightly dotted, with light grey shading inside the loops and ribbon. The image is a close, straight-on shot against a bright window background, with the tattoo centred in the lower half of the frame.

The ribbon had worked loose again by the time Ada reached post forty-one, so she stopped the van in the heat shimmer and tied it a second time. Her aunt had started the habit thirty years ago on the salt road between the two dry lakes, a ribbon on every post so a driver could tell the road was still being kept. Ada had inherited the spools along with the haberdashery in town, a tin of pins, and a ledger of names that stopped in 1994.

She had counted forty-two ribbons when she set out that morning, faded from red to pink to the colour of weak tea. The forty-first post was different. Someone had tied a small bow there, neat and tight, with two ends trailing west, and beneath it a rusted tobacco tin was wedged in the gap between the post and its brace. Inside, folded in oilcloth, was a card in a hand she didn't know: Still here. Keep going.
Ada sat on the running board for a while and let the wind push grit across her boots. Then she unspooled a length of green ribbon, made a loop that wouldn't slip, and tied it beside the old bow so both ends pointed the same way. She put the card back in the tin, left the lid off, and drove on with the window down, listening to the posts behind her ring faintly as the wind found the ribbons one after another.
