Three small red fine line heart tattoos on wrists and hands, photographed in black and white with the ink left in colour.

Three small red hearts on wrists

Fine line · Hand · Colour · Photo

Three small heart tattoos sit on separate wrists and hands, with two in red and one in a lighter pink. The hearts are drawn with thin, loose linework that tapers at the ends, with a slightly open curl at the top. The photograph is desaturated apart from the ink, which makes the coloured hearts stand out against the grey skin and background.

Dear Ilse, the officer at the Kesh crossing turned our passports over three times before he gave them back, as if the stamps might rub off on his thumb. Mama's little tin of inks is in my coat pocket. I have not opened it since the morning we left the flat above the bakery.

You will remember the night before. Mama sat us on the kitchen step under the lamp, dipped her finest pen in the red she used for jam labels, and drew a heart in ink on each of us. Anneke's was pink, because she had asked for pink, and she said it tickled. The lines went thin at the tails and curled over at the top, because Mama said a heart should look thought about rather than stamped.

Anneke's is the one I keep looking at. At the barrier this morning she held her arm out for the guard to see, and he only glanced at the ink and said nothing, which I took as a kindness. Yours is the red one that smudged when you scrubbed at it in the sink, so you went over it again with the pen before bed, and the curl at the top is heavier now than mine.

The bus is loading. I will post this from the other side if they let me carry a stamp. Keep the tin. If the next officer asks what the hearts mean, tell him they are only drawings. He will not believe you, and he will let you through anyway.
