Pineapple tattoo on the lower leg
Dotwork · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small pineapple is drawn in black linework, with its crown of leaves at the top. The fruit is divided down the middle, with one half shaded in stippled dots and the other filled with a hexagonal diamond pattern. The design is in black and grey ink on lightly tanned skin, set against a pale background with a grey garment at the top of the frame.

Dear Tobiah,

The king's pineapples came up on the cart again this morning, six of them wrapped in wet sacking, and I had to cut the first one open in the yard before the steward would sign for it. He wants to see the flesh is sound. He always wants to see. I took the knife to it the way Mother taught us, straight down the middle so the crown stays whole on one side, and the juice ran over my wrists and smelt like the orchard in February.
Half of it I left as it was, the rough brown skin of the south lawn, dotted all over where the frost got in last winter. The other half I scored the old way, diamond on diamond, so it looks like the panes in the Long House roof. I thought the steward would laugh. He didn't. He picked up the diamond half and turned it in the light for a long time, then asked whether the glasshouse had been built by the same hands as the walls of the palace, and I said I did not know.
Here is the thing I have not told anyone. Each night since you left I have sat with the lamp and tried to decide which half of the fruit I am. Sand or glass. Mother would have said the fruit does not choose; it is only cut. I think she was wrong about that, Tobiah, and I think you knew it too, which is why you went.
Come home before the spring cutting. The south lawn is coming back green and I have kept one good plant for you, in the warm corner, under a pane with no crack in it.
Your brother, Anselm
