Fine line moon and line tattoos on fingers
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands rest against a plain white background with the fingers interlocked. A single thin black line runs along the side of one finger on each hand, and a small outlined crescent moon sits on the side of a finger on the upper hand. The linework is delicate and even, in black ink only, and the close framing keeps the tattoos as the focal point.

Dear Tom, the cable came down again on Tuesday, so I have rowed the Halloway crossing by hand for three days and my shoulders have opinions about it. The new line the council strung is a thin steel thing, no thicker than a pencil stroke, and when the light goes flat across the water you can barely see it. I have taken to tying a scrap of white rag to the post on my side so the boys from the mill know where to hold on.

Father always said the crossing was the only honest road in the valley, because it ends where it begins. He kept a crescent moon painted on the hut door so travellers knew when the last boat went over, and when the paint flaked off he never repainted it. He said the moon would do the job itself once it came up thin enough to see.
I went to see the surveyor about the cable last week. He is a quiet man with ink on his cuffs who draws straight lines for a living, and he asked me whether a line could be a promise. I told him a line is only a thing that holds two banks apart until the weather decides otherwise. He laughed and said it was the most sensible thing anyone had said to him all year, then walked me back to the boat and waited on the far bank until I was safely across, which took most of the afternoon.
Come home at the new moon. I will be on the near bank with the lamp lit, and I will row you over myself, slowly, so you can count the wet stones as they slide past the bow.
Yours, Nell
