You know the signal. The small black arrow on the side of his middle finger has pointed the way to the best ground for twenty-two winters, and nobody aboard has ever asked why he trusts it over the echo sounder.

The other boats are turning north for the Dogger, the wind is backing, and the glass has dropped a tenth since breakfast. You know what he is asking. Haul early. Dessie watches it swing over the rail, nods once and lowers his fist. On the radio someone is laughing about a bet they've lost. Later, with the boat rolling home under a low sky, he slides the silver band off his ring finger, turns it over in his palm, and you realise the arrow has never once pointed at anything but the way back in.
