Old Mother Aske, who kept the mill race and trusted nobody with her bread, set a saucer of milk on her threshold. By morning it was licked clean and a dead rat lay beside it, laid out neat as a gift. The cat would take nothing else. She sat on the wall by the ruined gate and watched the road, and when the wool carter came rattling up in the dark with two men hiding a stolen church bell under his sacks, she was the only one who saw.

She did not yowl or run. She sat in the middle of the road with her eyes like two dark coins until the carter hauled on the reins. Then she turned and walked slowly up the hill into the keep, and the men followed her lantern, because a cat walking so calmly must know where she was going. They did not see the rotten stair until the third step gave way under the bell's weight, and the whole cursed load rang out into the cellar dark.

In spring Mother Aske found the saucer full every morning and the cat asleep on the gatepost, her pale whiskers stirring in the warm air. Nobody ever asked her name. The village simply called her the Keeper, and filled the saucer, and never once thought to ask what else she might keep.
