Cat outline behind the ear
Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A single black outline of a sitting cat, shown in profile with pointed ears, whiskers and a curled tail. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the tattoo sits on the skin of the neck just behind the ear. The plain skin and dark hair make the single-line design stand out clearly.

The cat came in with the snow, the way it always did, and sat on the lino outside Bay Four as if it had been booked. Night sister Maud Ferris counted it on her two o'clock round. It was grey, upright, with its tail wrapped round its feet, and it looked at the lift doors as though somebody was due out of them. Nobody had let it in. The porters said it had been there since the new wing opened, and that it never came nearer the ward doors than the threshold.

Maud had a rule from her grandmother, who had worked nights at a cottage hospital in Cumbria: you did not chase a cat off a ward. Cats knew which way the dying were going, and they sat where the path bent. So when Mr Oddie in Bay Four began talking to his brother, who had been dead forty years, Maud fetched a saucer of milk from the kitchenette and set it down. The cat stood, stretched, and walked past her into the room without a sound.
Nothing dramatic happened. The cat curled on the blanket by Mr Oddie's feet, he slept, and the monitor kept its steady green line. At six the cat rose, shook itself, and walked back to the lift. The doors opened for it, which they had never done for anyone, and it stepped inside with its tail curled like a question mark and was gone.
When the day staff came on, the saucer was empty and clean, and Mr Oddie was awake and asking for his tea. Maud wrote in the log that there had been a cat on the ward. The day sister asked which cat. Maud said the one that knew the way, and went home through the snow.
