The cat was called Ninepence because someone once swore she had nine lives and someone else paid a penny for her. She belonged to nobody on the field, which meant she belonged to all of us, and she went from caravan step to caravan step taking a little warmth from each. Dot said she was a judge. Every summer she sat near the raffle and every summer she chose, with the slow patience of a magistrate, which of the folded tickets would win. Nobody had ever thought to write her choices down.

When the lights came back at half past nine, Ninepence was asleep on top of the prize drum. Dot lifted her off gently, pulled out the ticket she had been sitting on, and read it aloud: forty-one. Forty-one was the number chalked on the tin of pennies by the gate, the one with a little cat face scratched into its lid. Dot looked at me, I looked at the cat, and the cat, having made up her mind, stretched and walked off into the dark between the hoopla stalls without once looking back.
