Small CAT lettering on the back of the neck
Lettering · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A person seen from behind, with light hair pulled to one side, shows a small tattoo of the word CAT on the back of the neck. The lettering is set in fine dark capitals with small dot marks either side, and the skin around it is smooth and unmarked. A white cat with its face turned towards the camera is held against the shoulder, and the photograph is in black and white with soft, even lighting.

Sit down, sit down, and mind the peat smoke. You've come to hear about the white cat of Inish Tarra, and you'll hear it my way or not at all. Her name was Cat, and I'll not hear a word about it being plain. Donal Rourke gave her that name the week his boat came in without him, because he said a thing with three letters could not be argued with and would be too busy to run off.

Every evening that winter she went down the strand ahead of the tide, sat on the last dry stone of the causeway, and waited with her tail curled round her feet. The fishermen's wives said she was counting the boats. Mairi, his granddaughter, said she was only cold and wanted looking at. Each night Mairi carried her up the cliff path on one shoulder, the way you'd carry a lamp, because the weight of her kept a body steady on the slope in the dark.
The turn came in February, when the fog sat on the water for nine days and no boat would go out. On the ninth night the cat slipped from the shoulder, walked to the edge of the path, and sat looking south with her ears forward. Mairi followed her. Out in the murk a single bell rang, once, then again, and a keel grated on the shingle below the causeway, exactly where the cat had been waiting all winter.
Mairi still walks that path at dusk with the cat's weight on her shoulder. When the fog comes in off the water she stops at the same stone and says to the sea what she said that night, plainly, the way you would to a friend: here, we are here.
