The bloom came up through the seed box I had kept under the galley stove, six pale petals no wider than a fingernail, each one edged in a thin dark line like a pen had slipped while someone was thinking. Cook says it is a weed. I say it is the only honest thing aboard, and I have told him so twice, which is once more than a man should bother telling a cook.

The curl came first, a green tendril that wound up the side of the box like a question mark that had lost its sentence. I have spent three evenings trying to draw it true. Mr Ashby, the second mate, leaned over my shoulder and said the curl was the plant asking which way home lay, and he laughed, and then stopped laughing when I told him the bosun's boys had moved the box twice without my leave.

Here is the turn. I had meant to press a specimen for the Society in Edinburgh, but when I went to lift it the petals had folded inward, the way your gloves do when left out in the rain. So I have kept the drawing instead. It is pinned above my bunk, outlined petals and all, and each morning the ship rolls I find it again before I find the floor.

Tell Father the nitrate is stowed and we should make Falmouth by the first, weather permitting. Keep the kettle warm. I will bring you something green that does not yet know it is a weed.
