The barge Marigold had carried coal up the Trent for thirty years, and the cat that came aboard at Gainsborough was not one anyone had asked for. It was thin and grey-striped and sat on the coiled rope by the tiller as if it had paid. Old Hannah Pell, who worked the lock gates at Torksey, said it was a fish-cat that had swum up from the estuary and lost its way, and that you must never name it or it would stay forever.

Her son Joss named it Pilot anyway, and it stayed. It rode the bow in fog, leapt the gunwale when the lines were thrown, and once went ashore at Cromwell Lock and came back three days later with a silver eel in its mouth, which it laid at Joss's boots like a receipt. Nobody believed the old woman about the fish-cat until the autumn the river rose over the towpath and the barge broke from her moorings in the dark.

Joss woke to water sluicing across the deck and the cat gone from the rope. He found it on the lock beam, streaming, tail lashed to the rail, staring down at the black flood where the Marigold's bow had been. Pilot leapt into the current and came up beside the drifting hull, and somehow turned it, paw over paw, back toward the lock cut until its keel grated on the gravel.

In the morning there was a faint blue line on the inside of Joss's wrist where the cat had bitten him to hold on. He told everyone it was only a scratch, and by the time it faded he had decided it wasn't, and he never once asked the cat why it had chosen him to climb aboard the barge.
