Every evening the sun had to be let down behind the hills, and every evening Aunt Greer complained that it went too fast. She kept the ring in her back kitchen, a circle of black iron as wide as a cartwheel hub with a bar laid straight across its middle. It hung on two nails above the flour bin, and nobody touched it. When my cousin Dafydd lifted it down once to see what it weighed, the sun stuck halfway on the ridge, and the drovers on the north road lit their lanterns at teatime and swore about it until supper.

The trouble started the spring Owen Pryce asked to borrow it for his wedding. Greer said no. He came back the next evening with his bride sitting on the cart beside him, and the two of them stood in the yard until she gave in, because a sun that goes down unseen is no use to anybody on a wedding day.

She made them hold it between them at the chapel gate, one hand under the iron each, fingers laced so the cold metal sat across their knuckles. Turn the bar to the ridge, she told them, keep it level, and the sun will go down where it is told. They did. The light slid along the bar like water along a rule and settled exactly on the edge of the hill.

Greer did not ask for the ring back that night. She left the two nails bare above the flour bin, and when people asked her why, she said the sun had found somebody else to mind it.
