Small script tattoo on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a leg in light blue skinny jeans with a grey and white striped slip-on shoe. A small cursive script word is tattooed on the inner ankle, drawn in thin black linework. The soft grey pavement and natural light keep the focus on the tattoo and the outfit.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You have been told the scriptorium is no place for a word that belongs to the road, yet Brother Anselm sets the quill in your hand anyway, and the ink is already thick from the cold. Outside the north window the lane runs down to the mill, where the carts stop to wait for the river to drop. You copy the psalms all morning, letter by letter, and by noon your wrist aches in the same place it always does.

The word is not in any psalm. You found it on the flyleaf of a book nobody has opened since the old abbot died, written small in a hand that leaned forward as if in a hurry. It said only one word, the one you have been turning over since you read it: home. Beside it someone had drawn a thin line, the sort a person draws to measure how far they have come.

On the last evening before the brothers scatter to the new houses, you carry the book to the gatehouse. The carter from the mill is waiting with his lamp, and you hand it up to him without a word. He turns the flyleaf to the light, reads it, and laughs softly through his nose. "My mother's hand," he says. "She went north with the wool and never came back for it."

You stand in the gate long after the cart is gone, your inked fingers cold. The bell for compline starts up, and you find you are counting the strokes, the way you count the letters you have left to finish.
