Small clothes hanger and heart on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small outline tattoo of a clothes hanger with a heart inside sits on the inner forearm, shown in a close-up photograph. The linework is thin and even, in black ink with no shading. The hand rests across the wrist wearing several rings and a studded bracelet, set against a soft, warm, out-of-focus background.

Nell had pressed the same blue shirt three times when the bell above the door of Pryce and Daughter rang, and the rain came in before the customer did. It was a man in a fisherman's oilskin, holding a wooden hanger the way other men hold a lifebelt. The hook was cracked clean through. He wanted to know whether the shop could mend a thing like that, or whether it could only sell him a new one.

Old Mr Pryce, who had taught her the trade on the quay side before his knees gave out, took the hanger and turned it over under the lamp. Nell saw what he saw: a tiny heart pencilled on the underside of the crossbar, faded almost to nothing. 'Your mother's?' he asked. The man shook his head. 'My wife's. She altered coats for this whole town for thirty years and never once hung one up without that little mark.'
Nell took the hanger into the back room and fitted a new brass hook from a box nobody had opened since the last harbour refit. It took an hour. When she came out the man had gone, and the oilskin lay folded on the counter with a fifty-pence coin tucked under the collar and a note in pencil: Put the heart back on, if you can.
She could not, not exactly. So she drew one on a strip of card, copying the shape from memory, and pinned it in the window beside the blue shirt. By Friday half the quay had come in asking for a hanger with a heart on it, and Mr Pryce, for once, said nothing at all.
