Small finger tattoos of simple symbols

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A hand is shown with small black tattoos on several fingers, including a zigzag line, a pizza slice with dots, an eye and a few small triangles, with a heart partly visible near the little finger. The linework is simple and thin, with the ink filled in solidly in places and no shading. Stacked gold rings sit on the middle finger, and the plain pale background keeps the focus on the marks.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The note had come back with the pizza box, folded into quarters and smeared with tomato, and under the cheese there was only a zigzag, two triangles and a dot. Marigold read it on the stairs, then again on the landing, because the code had not been used since the spring of 1994 and she was fairly sure Ruth had lost the key.

They had invented it at fifteen, during double maths, passing scraps across Mrs Pryce's classroom. A triangle meant yes. A zigzag meant the bus was late again. An eye meant the head was watching, and a slice of pizza with dots meant meet at the chippy on Caldwell Road after the last bell, which had never once been a joke, because the chips were always good and the boys who followed them home were not. They drew the marks on each other's hands in biro so the code would travel with them.

Ruth had moved to Leeds in September and stopped writing. When Marigold opened the door of the flat expecting a takeaway menu, there was a brass ring on the mat, three thin bands stacked together, and a gummed label that read: still going? She slid it onto her middle finger, where it sat loose, and went down the stairs in her slippers.

Ruth was on the step outside the chippy, holding two paper cones of chips, with a fresh triangle inked on her knuckle. 'You're late,' she said. 'The bus is always late,' Marigold said, and sat down beside her. Ruth passed her a cone without looking up. Yes, the triangle said. It always had.
