Small cloud raining hearts on an upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A small black outlined cloud sits on the upper arm, with a trail of tiny solid black hearts falling diagonally down the skin beneath it. The linework is thin and even, and the hearts are filled in with a uniform black ink. The background is softly blurred greenery, and a pale yellow sleeve covers the top of the frame.

Dear Priya,

You were right about the sports hall. Someone had strung up the same green crepe paper from the Year Eleven leavers' do, and it still smelled faintly of the chip van that used to park by the gates. I didn't stay for the raffle. I walked down to the bus shelter on Harcourt Road with Mr Okonedo's old black umbrella, the one he lent us for the Dungeness trip, and I sat there until the 14 came and the rain came with it.
You'll remember the cloud. Jamie Pell drew it in the back of our chemistry exercise books every single week of the lower sixth, a small puffy shape with a trail of hearts falling beneath it, and Mrs Halloran never once told him off for it. Jamie's rule was that a heart only fell when someone in the room had been let down, and that the rest of us had to catch it before it hit the bench. I caught a lot of them that year. You caught the ones about your dad.
Dani Frost found me at the bus shelter with an envelope she said had been pressed on her by Jamie's mum. Inside was a photocopy of a page from the back of a chemistry book, the cloud drawn in blue biro, the hearts going down diagonally past a doodle of a Bunsen burner. On the back, in Jamie's handwriting, someone had written: Tell them I counted. Eleven hearts, eleven of us who left Hastings and never came back for a reunion. I had always thought the cloud was about sadness. It was about who was still in the room.
I've been thinking about that all the way home on the train. Next Thursday I'm going to draw the cloud on the inside cover of my own notebook and send you the photocopy. Bring the umbrella back to Mr Okonedo if he's still at the school gates. Tell him it's about time.
Love, Fern
