Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small solid black crescent moon sits on the side of one finger of a hand held up near the face. The shape has smooth, tapered edges and a soft, slightly textured fill. The photograph is close and softly lit, with the tattoo in sharp focus against warm skin tones.

The night the bell tower went silent, my master sent me into the Hollin Wood with a lantern and a tin of oil, because the new moon had slipped its hook over the spire and hung there like a thumbnail caught in cloth. Nobody in Ashcombe would climb for it. I had no such fear, only a debt, for I had broken the old escapement the winter before and owed the parish a clock.

The wood gave way to a clearing where the bracken stood knee-high and silver. There, on a stump, sat a woman mending a fishing net with a bone needle. She did not look up. She only said that the moon had been cut too thin to carry the tides and that someone would have to sharpen it back, and that she would trade me its curve for the first thing I had lost that I still remembered the weight of.
I thought of my mother's brass thimble, which I had lost in the river at nine, and I told her so. She nodded as if that would serve, then took my hand and pressed a cold black sliver against the side of my smallest finger. It bit, and then it stopped biting. When I looked, a crescent sat there no bigger than a grain of rice, clean as a seed.
I walked home with the lantern dark. In the morning the bell rang true, and the moon came back over Ashcombe whole enough to see by. I still wear the little curve when I wind the clocks, and I have never once been late.
