Dear Nell, the boat went out again on Tuesday without Tom, and Mrs Pascoe says he has gone to his brother's in Newlyn, though nobody has seen the brother this year. I am writing because you asked what the harbour looks like with the new lamp on the breakwater, and I have been trying to answer properly for three nights.

The lamp is the same yellow as the old one but it sits lower, so from the top of Chapel Hill you cannot see the light from the bar at all, only the glow it throws on the wet slipway. Father would have hated that. He used to say the moon was the only honest light a fisherman got, because it came round the same way every month and never pretended to be something else. Last night there was just a thin paring of it over the Mount, not even half, curved like a fingernail someone had bitten short.

Tom's mother came up to the shop with her list and stood in the doorway counting the days out loud, the way she does now. I told her the moon would be full by Sunday. She said that was the trouble with moons, they were always promising. I didn't argue. I gave her the tin of tea she likes and a loaf still warm from the oven, and she took them without thanking me, which is how I know she will come back for more.

I'll keep the lamp lit in my window for Tom, and if the boat comes in on the flood I will know before anyone tells me. Write soon, and tell Mum the hens are laying again.
